URBAN DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION

Budějárna is among the most important development areas in Prague today. Despite being located in the vicinity of Budějovická metro station, one of the city’s principal transport hubs, its potential has not yet been fully realised. An international urban design and architectural competition is seeking a new vision for the area, which has the potential to become a vibrant centre of Prague 4, offering high-quality public spaces, housing, services, and improved conditions for everyday life.

location

Budějárna is a major hub in Prague 4, situated near Budějovická metro station. Although it is one of the most significant areas in this part of the city, the site’s current state does not reflect its importace. Traffic and parking dominate the area, public spaces are fragmented and difficult to navigate, and there is a lack of high quality places for leisure, greenery, safe and convenient connections between different parts of the area. At the same time, the location has extraordinary potential to become a vibrant urban centre offering high quality public spaces, new housing, services and a pleasant environment for everyday life.

What should Budějárna look like in the future? The answer will be sought through an international urban design and architectural competition, to which leading Czech and international architectural firms will be invited. The aim of the competition is to find a solution that will transform the current site into a vibrant city centre with high-quality public spaces, housing, services and better conditions for movement and everyday life.

public participation

How should Budějárna function in the future? This question is being addressed not only by architects and experts, but also by the people who use the area every day. Through meetings, a questionnaire, an exhibition and a consultation group, the public was able to share their experiences of the site, highlight its problems, identify their needs and express their concerns regarding its future development. These inputs became part of the material provided to the competition teams.
